Feeling: nerdy

Last year, many of you saw me and my sister walking around wearing O'Neill-Jackson '08 shirts and were interested in getting your own. We're not just offering t-shirts anymore! Make sure to get your O'Neill-Jackson '08 campaign swag, either for con or for the hell of it.

And because I'm hoping to raise some money to help defray the cost of D*C -- which is probably excessively optimistic on my part, since currently I'm bringing in just enough to cover the cost of having a premium shop -- here are some other fun products my fellow con-goers might be interested in, under the cut. )

Dealer room in year 2000
by Pirate Jenny ([info]bonnyread)
at May 16th, 2008 (12:00 am)

This is a very specific question, and I don't expect anyone to have the answer, but...

Way back in 2000 I attended my first DragonCon, and I stumbled across a treasure in the dealer room. If I remember right, the seller mainly stocked books, but my treasure was a piece of art (I can only assume it was the original art, because I doubt prints have ever been made from this) from the cover of one of my favorite books: The Best of Cordwainer Smith.  I was a poor college student at the time, and I don't remember the exact price tag, but it was ridiculously out of my budget. Cordwainer Smith is a reletivly obscure artist, so just seeing this was amazing, and it has haunted me ever since. Does anyone know who might have been selling it or what may have become of it?

Title: Misuse of Alexander Graham Bell's Invention
Author: Strifechaos
Fandom: entourage
Pairing: Vincent Chase/Eric Murphy
Warnings: slash, smut
Kink: phone sex
Rating: FRAO
Summary: Vince can always get E to do what he wants, eventually.
Prompt:[Kevin Connolly on always filming E while talking on his cell phone] "The only person that talks on their cell phone more than me on TV is Kiefer Sutherland on 24." ...E has to get some good calls every now and again, right? Vince/Eric
Author's Notes: This story is a lot of firsts for me: the fandom, the kink, the dialogue-only format; so if I didn’t get the ‘right’ combination and the characters are completely OOC I’ll understand.

retail photography studio crazyness.

dear cheap-asses valued customers,

when we tell you we do not have any open appointments on the day before mother's day, yes, you can believe it IS true. no, we are not making up. i do not care if your coupon for a free sheet expires today. guess what? that's our standard offer. it's ALWAYS there, so no, we are not going to overstress and triple book ourselves just so you can get your free sheet. we will not also stay open late for you so you can get it. no.

yes, we can [and often do] email coupons to our customers. yes, you can even sign up for the e-mail coupons. if you don't want to give your address, yes, you can go to our website and get our standard coupon [free 8x1- or 10x13]. but you see that big red circle that takes up 1/4 of the coupon picture and says "CLICK TO PRINT COUPON"? yes, you actually do have to click that and print it. that is the part that has the coupon CODE on it. it's especially important when your coupon is beyond our standard [aka free sheet and a percentage off]. we don't have automatic codes for those. no, i am not "deliberately trying to rip you off". i apologize for not being the robot who memorizes obscure coupon codes.

and ma'am, i don't care if you are just using your coupon today. but if it says free 8x10 or 10x13, you would actually have to get an 8x10 or 10x13 to be able to apply it to your purchase. and the offer is only for the sheet. it does not come with a 30 dollar frame. if you actually were a regular customer, you would know that.

again, what you buy is your personal business. what you do with your prints is your personal business. and while it is illegal to scan your pictures to make copies, if you do it in your house with your own scanner, i really can't stop you. however, you do not have the right to yell at me and my co-workers if your scanner can't scan the whole thing and print it at a proper size. we also will not give you tips on how to upload your pictures. and we will not give you a copyright release form so you can take it to another camera store and make extra copies. seriously? seriously?

no love,
your underpaid photographer sales girl

Hey, some portions of Batfandom. You know Catwoman, that person you write a lot of fics about? Yes, she's technically a part of Batman's rogue gallery, but she's more of an antihero than a real villain. These days, she's practically Robin Hood. And by at least one origin that's pretty canon as far as these things go in the DCU, she was a sex worker until she was raped.

Hence, not a big fan of rape or prostitution.

So your magnum opus about Catwoman raping and whoring out [insert sexualized superheroine here]? That's just not how she rolls. In fact, Batman would probably tongue-kiss the Joker before that happened. Would Catwoman steal Barbara Gordon's jewelry? Yes. Her innocence? Not so much, no.

A nine hour shift and amazingly only one bad customer...

Dear WIC woman,

When you handed me your WIC I was a little annoyed because it was crumpled and ripped up. I flattened it out and proceeded to ring up your stuff cheerfully despite the annoyance of such disrespect to your WIC papers.
You then yelled at me for having my conveyor belt on. Personally I dont think you have any right to yell at me for using the conveyor belt when you are unwilling to push down your stuff. It is there for my convenience as well as yours. I continued to smile and ring up your stuff despite you yelling at me and throwing your stuff onto my conveyor belt in a frustrated manner.
As I totaled out your stuff and began to fill out the WIC you then yelled at me to stop saying I didnt get your bonus card. We dont scan bonus cards for WICs. It makes no difference if I do because you dont get to keep the savings. The savings help you in no way. There is no point to it,. If any of your stuff had been on sale, since I had already finished filling out the WIC, my boss would have been very mad at me because the WIC would have the wrong total on it. If you know anything about WICs, they are very tricky and specific. We would not get our money back if I had written the wrong information on it. Lucky for me, none of your stuff was on sale since you ignored me when I explained this to you.
Finally, to make you happy, a little less angry, I was about to take your bonus card to scan it for you but you yanked your hand away from me. That was really rude. Even worse, you then reached in front of me and scanned it yourself. Please, keep out of my space. I do not want you reaching in front of me to scan your card. In fact, none of our cashiers appreciate it when the customers do that.
I dont know why you were so angry when you came into my line. I know you just got off of work. You were still in your McDonalds uniform and I understand that working there has got to be a really tough and tedious job. I understand. But when I greet you with a smile and through all of your rudeness tell you to have a great day, I would think you could have been a little more polite.
To put it simply, as one of my coworkers said to me earlier today, you do not know me other than this brief moment in time. I said hello, asked how you were, wished you a great day. You had no reason to be mad at me. Either way, I still only wish the best for you because you seemed to be tired and stressed...
Hopefully next time I see you, you will have figured out how to be more polite.
Your neighborhood Food Lion cashier.

Listening to: Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls

I came home to a super obscurely groovy surprise tonight. [info]willowgreen sent me a box of stuff from her stash of "obscure grooviness." Wee Hob and I were both delighted, he even though he's been under the weather for a couple of days with an odd spring fever (with actual fever. He had to come home from school yesterday, and he came in today and mostly slept tonight, with brief stints of soup eating and a shower.)

Anyway, thanks to [info]willowgreen for your generosity. Now I have to come up with something equally groovy for [info]snarkysneak.

But at the moment, bedtime I think. For those of you staying up later, I highly recommend the next chapter in Malora's continuing epic, Never Say Remember. Her dialogue is perfect, understated but full of meaning, and damned funny when it needs to be. She is the poster child for why people should finish a draft before posting anything-- this story is so tightly crafted and beautifully done, so unlike mine. Don't get me wrong, mine has its moments. But it wanders a lot, and I am seeing, reading it to Wee Hob the past couple of nights, how much could and should be cut. Ah well. Information for next time.

Hey -- throwing this out here to find out if anyone else would be interested in doing Dark Tower costumes.

Some of my friends are putting together a general Stephen King group, but so far I'm the only DT person -- I'm planning on a Jake Chambers outfit -- and I'd really like to see anyone else from either ka-tet, or the books in general! I know there's got to be plenty of people out there who have read the series, so help me out, if it do ya.

Obviously, I'd love to see the rest of Jake's ka-tet, especially Roland (I think I saw one a couple years ago...), but it would be pretty awesome to see Cuthbert, Alain, etc, and any other characters you'd like to portray. (Several people should get together and do Blaine; it'd be epic.)

I don't know about doing anything for the parade -- I've never done it before, and I'm not sure how I'd cope with that -- but if anyone's interested in general, drop a comment and we'll have us a palaver.

Listening to: Lauridsen: O Magnum Mysterium - Morten Lauridsen

Oh my. I just saw the most amazing movie. "Snow Cake," starring Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver. What a beautiful, life-affirming story, with wonderful performances and a very unusual plot.

Here's a decent review.

And here's my take on it. (Spoilers, probably.)  )
I highly recommend this movie. I'm also struck again by how different Alan is in the different roles I've seen him play, and how good he is at conveying an emotional depth of reality with very small gestures. In this role, he does lost and bewildered very well, and touched. He is light years from his Snape, and seeing him in this much older role and then pictures of him from OotP (filmed about the same time) he looks years younger in the latter. It's odd, but with Buffy fanfic, I had so many more visual stimuli from the TV show and from other roles I'd seen especially Tony Head perform, and they helped me see how characters in my fics would look and react to things. It's not at all the case with Snape. I have some images from the movies I carry in my head, but I have many more from the books, and from various fanfics, and really his other roles don't have much to say to me for Snape. Maybe I'm growing a little bit, that the words of a scene are starting to come to have more resonance and reality for me than "seeing" the scene as an observer. Don't know what to make of that, but I toss it out for whatever it's worth.

I'm looking forward to the release of Bottle Shock with Alan later this year. Of course, I'm also looking forward to the new Indiana Jones movie next week.

I think this was a small series or at least  few stories that were some how connected together. It is an OT4 fic that is on earth and each person gets a certain animal. I think Ronan and Rodney get cats and John gets a dog, but Teyla has problems with her animals. I know there is a line about Shawshank Redemption ferrets or something to that effect. I know it is really vague, but thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, I know really-long-lived character/normal-lifespan character ships are set up for kind of a sad ending.  I did watch Highlander.

But having the really-long-loved character magically alters the mortal human to make them live for the exact same lifespan as the really-long-lived one is creepy.  It makes it seem like really-long-lived guy is assuming that, should he be killed through bad luck or violence, the normal-lifespan character would have nothing to live for.  If a character's going to assume that their partner has nothing to live for outside the relationship, I'm going to be less charmed by the romance than scared for the other person.

It's doubly creepy if really-long-lived guy doesn't tell his partner what he's doing to them until after it's done.

It would make good darkfic, but sadly that's not the context where I've run across it.

“Hey, Gero’s about to blow something up!”I was informed. “Five minutes!” I set aside my work, grabbed my camera, and made my way down to the far end of the lot where Marty G. was directing this year’s trio of Superfan Promos. In the pouring rain. I found him umbrella-less and standing by while the FX crew ran through their final preparations for the stunt - measuring, discussing, adjusting. The ambulance idling by the Viz building was no doubt meant to be reassuring, but it ended up having the opposite effect.

“Clear the area!”came the call. We scrambled back, beyond the safety perimeter and behind the big plexi-glass shield and watched the monitor as Scott from the SFX department scurried up behind the cannon as if he were sneaking up on it, lit the fuse, then bolted for cover.

The flame burned all the way down and…petered out. Great, I thought. Now who the hell are they going to convince to go out there and re-light the damn thing? I heard Carl give a nervous chuckle and then - KABLAM!!! A chorus of car alarms rose up to fill the post-explosive silence.

I poked my head around the corner as the other producers came out of hiding. Crew members were already on the scene, putting out the spot fires with their handy extinguishers. “That was great!”enthused Carl, ever a fan of careful planning, skillful execution and blowing shit up.

A great time was had by all (especially Carl), and the promos turned out great. I’m just sorry I wasn’t around later that afternoon when they set BamBam on fire.
